A 2006 study discovered that microwaving wet sponges for two minutes (at 1000 watt energy) eliminated 99% of coliforms, E. coli and MS2 phages. Bacillus cereus spores were killed at four minutes of microwaving. A 2017 research was much less affirmative: about 60% of the germs have been killed but the remaining ones quickly re-colonized the sponge.
